An externship is a short-term career opportunity that may last a few days to weeks. This career opportunity will give you an inside view of a company which may include shadowing and mentoring from a current employee and networking. Externships may be virtual or on-site while they may be paid while others are unpaid.

An apprenticeship is where employers provide on-the-job training along with classroom instruction. As an apprentice, you gain work experience, valuable skills for the workplace, and possibly a stipend.

Employers usually choose college sophomores, juniors, seniors, or recent graduates for their internship programs, some companies will hire college freshmen or high school students. Internships require a deeper commitment than the previous career opportunities, internships are usually full-time and may be remote or in-person.
Which of these career opportunities should I apply for?
It depends on several factors. If you are a college freshman or unsure of your future career an externship is the way to go. An externship will give you a peek into your prospective career without a long-term commitment. Another option is an apprenticeship where you get classroom instruction and professional skills.
The summer after you complete your freshmen year, you should start applying for internships for the following summer. You can also apply for an externship, apprenticeship, or fellowship during the school year, the programs are essentially pre-internships. These pre-internships will help develop your professional skills and strengthen your network abilities which gives you an advantage over students that don’t have any career exposure.
If you can’t land an internship after your sophomore year, still apply for the other career programs because they are a great pathway to your dream internship. Junior year you should be actively applying for internships, most large companies recruit for their internships in the summer and early fall. If you are a senior and you have not landed an internship you should continue to apply for internships and all the above career options, as well as apply for your career position—most employers want new hires to come in with some type of career experience.
